Somebody's Baby (Not Mine)

Somebody's Baby (Not Mine)

This bike belongs to no one you know. And no one that I know, either.

I went looking. Down at the drop-in center's parking lot where, well, a lot of sketchy types hang out, I saw what I was certain was the animal in question. I smelled blood, or, at least, I smelled something red.

I went to the cops, who, after I explained the situation, "sent two units." They took along with them a large and heavy pair of pliers which, they assured me, "would handle most chains."

We waited. Then officer MacDonald called my cell. Does it have gel in the seat? Yes. Does it have a kickstand? Huh? I don't recall a kickstand. Did it have one? It didn't have a kickstand, did it?

The supervisor returned from the scene shortly and addressed me from behind the wheel of his truck. "They're bringing it back with them," he told me. "This is your bike."

The tone in his voice told me one thing: The bike was already in the back of the cruiser and damnit all, no matter what, I would be bringing home whatever bike they were bringing back. I crossed my fingers and... THIS thing arrived. Close, but no cigar:

- Blue wire drink holder thing. Would Natalia even ride a bike that didn't have matching accessories?
- The blue gel seat wasn't, uh, blue-gelly enough.
- Caliper front brakes-- not disc brakes at all
- Caliper rear brakes-- no rear tire at all
- Oh. And that goddamned rear kickstand.

Same frame, though.

I shall continue to focus all the powers of Montyness on the quest.
